Are hashpower wars the crypto equivalent of a hostile corporate takeover? Well yes and no. They are certainly a disruption to 'normal' market values and there can be terminal consequences for the loser, but beyond that they are quite different.
Today, 15th November 2018 we will most likely see the commencement of a long and capital intensive hashwar between two very well capitalised groups (they may not be so well capitalised after the war!). While this is a painful short term thing for the markets, such wars were anticipated by the Bitcoin whitepaper (ref para 12) and therefore should be seen as a further live test of the Bitcoin experiment. A test I am sure it will pass.
For an excellent analysis of the strategies and potential consequences of this war, the article here is the best I have read.
